S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The Shadow of Chernobyl.
Very different FPS to any other I've played. Its not linear, and whole sections can be skipped. The AI is unpredictable, and there are roving bands of NPC, some hostile, some neutral. There are different factions too, and I've recently made a choice which has unfortunately lead me to be attacked on sight in one of the main areas...
It is also a game that cannot be rushed, you can't just sprint through and frag everything, even if you did work out how to cheat for invincibility. The maps are all huge, enemies respawn, you have to walk/run everywhere, and you have to constantly return to places you've already been. In fact, its almost an RPG in that sense, but uses an FPS combat mode, which is highly realistic.
It has one of the best physics engines in any game I've seen so far, including weapon accuracy. Just because you aim somewhere, doesn't mean you are going to hit. A sniper riffle is much more accurate than a shotgun, but only if you take time to sit still and aim properly.
There are a few freaky bits in the game, due to some creatures being warped by the radiation (the game is set a score or two years in the future.... and Chernobly blew up again around 2006 I think.). There is one mutant called the blood sucker, which has tentacles where its mouth should be... and can turn invisible until it attacks you. Your only warning is its cry, and a slight warping in front of you. You can also see its eyes... if its facing you, there are two little white globes, thats often the only warning you get, and then its on you!
