i use a lot more open chords now than i used to, i find the sonic qualities of those particular notes are much more vibrant than say a flat 5 power chord ever could hope to be. This is the lesson I learned from Malcolm.... and a valuable lesson it was.

more stuff I'm learning:
Scourged Flesh: Learning the first couple of songs off of Bury the Lies.... I think I've got most of it sorted, just a couple of bits I've still gotta figure out...
For anyone who wants to know, I think that the tuning is Eb... I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to my ears... Maybe Dave knows....

Grrr, you and you play by ear

actually it was pretty easy to pick the tuning.... there's lots of open 6th string "chugging", so I went from there.... I figured it was one of the 3 "standard" metal tunings (E, Eb, or D), so I played the note on the 5th string until I got it right.... which took about 5 seconds...

i was talking about how you can work out the riffs by ear. I've never been good at that, I've always been better at sight reading music than playing by ear.

well, you have one up on me... I can read music, but I'm not very good at it, especially sight reading....
Plus, I can really only figure out bits and pieces here and there, and lead work always gives me problems....
I was actually taught by my old guitar teacher how to do it properly....

Yeah, I can read music well, but I need a trumpet to be able to play it well Learning to pick things up by hearing them would be very useful for Christian metal, as not much f it has been tabbed

another thing I'm trying to learn:
The guitar solo to Fast as a Shark by Accept.
Nice dual harmony thing which is pretty straightforward to play, but it's the getting it up to speed bit that makes it tough for me, as I have difficulty in playing 16th notes that require hand movement in any speed over about 100bpm. I've made it my goal to try and get it down by the end of the year (yes, that's how much I suck at lead!!)

yeah, somehow I think I'll pass on that one.... although pick tapping can get a lick done pretty quick for that.

I play covers, and I have a style: Crap.
Anyway. Had a go at No Eye Has Seen off of DFA... think I got most of it down. The rhythm parts anyway.

I was watching the Rude Awakning DVD yesterday... Al makes that solo look so easy... Anyways, I figured out most of "Thine Hour Hast Come" tonight while I was watching Horde's Alive In Oslo DVD

I've been playing around with "Drink From The Chalice Of Blood". Only about 3 simple riffs, but the speed and rhythm is the tricky part.... finding the tabs wasn't too bad

I actually really wanna learn Invert the Inverted Cross, but it's kinda tricky to hear the guitar in the midst of all the awesomeness that's going on in that song..
