Morbid Sacrifice-Severed Death
Released-2006
Label-Open Grave Records
Genre-Death Metal
This is the first release for the up and coming label Open Grave Records. Morbid Sacrifice plays death metal with some classic metal influence. The cover artwork is rather morbid indeed. It features pictures from the Cemetary Chapel at Sedec Monastary in the Czech Republic. It is an entire chapel decorated with human remains, very creepy. The packaging is very nice with the lyrics printed in the insert. A very professional package for a brand new label. This is no CD-R release.
The music of this disc is kind of a mixed bag of some really cool songs and some really uninteresting songs. The first song The Offering starts off with a slower pace that quickly goes into a faster more grinding section of riffs. The guitar playing is good and interesting throughout this song. The vocals come in and I find myself starting to get bored. The vocals are your typical deep death metal growls. Gutteral and hard to understand, but if you have the lyrics with you, you shouldnt have any problems. Sometimes the vocals are out of time with the music and sound very forced. Also about half way through the song he does this weird evil sounding laugh which I thought was kind of cheesy. Not a great song to open the album with. After that comes the song Buried Alive. This is where the classic metal influence starts to show through. The song starts with a more classical riff. It then speeds up and the vocals kick in and the death metal comes back to the forefront. The riff on this song is a lot more catchy than on The Offering. The vocals on this song are done mostly as high pitched shrieks. The shrieking could be much better but isnt completely horrible. There is a lot of classic metal happy galloping going on on this one. A much much much much better song than The Offering. Next up is an interesting death/grind song called Humping the Dead(ill explain the lyrics later in the review). Its only 30 seconds and is brutal. Not much else to say about it. Misogynicide comes in next with a strong brutal intro, the only thing that kills it is the deep growl at the beggining that turns into a shriek but doesnt quite make it, it sounds like the vocalist is choking. The song really picks up after that though and with a melodic section breaking into burst of brutality followed by some more triumphant galloping. Im not sure if the galloping fits but it certainly keeps the songs interesting. Luckily the vocals are mostly deep death growls on this one. This song is the turning point on the CD since the songs get better from here. Severed Death has a sweet melodic introduction, this one has a strong Iron Maiden vibe to it, which is a definite plus. The brutality then kicks in with a super fast pace and deep growled vocals. The song manages to stay interesting throwing some variation into the riffage making it the major highlight of this album.
Divinely Exhumed starts off with a creepy melodic intro that soon breaks into a mid paced section of heaviness that then breaks into the creepy melodic part again. Finally the song speeds up and then breaks back into a mid paced riff and the whole thing really begins. This song is another good one that flows well together. The shrieking vocals are much better on this one. I also like the melodic nature of this song. Whom I Serve is next, I like the song except for the repetition of "I serve Jesus" over and over again. I think this hurts it more than helps it. After that part the song kind of chops along at a semi fast pace. The brutality kicks in but is plauged by repetitiveness again. Deliverance of the Beast Starts off with one of the strangest movie clips I have ever heard, gives me the creeps. The song is brutal and picks up the speed quite a bit, but it sounds like the vocalist is once again trying to fit too many words into a small space, so it just comes off as choppy. It then abruptly ends with the movie clip which sounds I guess like the demon being killed or something.
Lyrically Morbid Sacrifice proves you should never judge a book by its cover. From a first glance youd think they only sang about dismembering Satan's corpse and feasting on his entrails. Really though the main message in the lyrics seems to be salvation through Jesus. They dont really deviate from that theme except for the song Misogynicide which is about how men shouldnt beat their wives. NOTE: The song Humping the Dead is about the stupid things that Satanists do to justify their lifestyles and worship their idols. The song does not condone humping the dead in any way. Are the lyrics cheesy sometimes? Yes. Are they cheesy all the time? No.
Overall this is a Cd that could have been a lot better, but it turns out that the band has actually been broken up for years and is kind of a compilation of songs that were written at very different time periods. If for some reason they were to reform again. I would recommend them focusing more on the melodic side of things and focus less on being brutal all the time.
