Metanoia-Dont Walk Dead
Released-1998
Label-Rowe Productions
Style-Extreme Metal
I'll start this review by saying that Ive had this album for four years now. Ive listened to it probably about 46 times in that time period, and must just give my honest opinion that I do not like it.
Metanoia come from Australia and is commonly refered to as a death metal band, though the band prefers not to be called death metal. I cant point out any bad musicianship on the disc. The grinding riffs are as grindy as ever, the drumming is fairly solid, they have heavy parts, and melodic parts. Despite having what sounds like a great formula, this band just doesnt interest me. The riffs I find to be uninspired and boring, they arent even generic, they are just uninteresting to my ears. Certain songs just drag on as well, did Yowie's Hilltop Adventure really have to be 8 minutes long? What I end up with is songs that arent interesting that are really long. The vocals I think are very brutal and would sound great in a grindcore band, the problem is, is that Metanoia is not a grindcore band. The vox are impossibly deep which makes it very hard to follow along in the booklet. There isnt really very much variation in the vocals either despite the occasional black metal shriek or hardcore shout. Also I feel that the band never really comes off as heavy, I mean if you ignore the vocals and just listen to the music, it really sounds more like punk or thrash. I dont mean to bash, there are plenty of people who love this band, but I for one cannot get into them.
The lyrics are straight to the point about Christ, no metaphors or anything of that sort. The lyrics are not cheesy though, they speak of Christ's love and a few moral issues. The problem is though, is that I cannot remember them that well, there were never any hooks that stood out besides the occasional same line growled five times in a row. I will go out on a limb and say that their later release of Time To Die was much better than this effort. Yowie's new band Sheep also shows promise. For me though, this band just never did anything.
