Mortification-Break the Curse
Released-1990
Label-Nuclear Blast Records
Style-Thrash/Death Metal
This would really be more of Mortification's first demo, than their first album. This was just a demo for the band to shop to labels and hopefully get them a record deal, which of course they did. A few years later it was re released by Nuclear Blast Records to kind of give a preview of the band's original sound.
On this demo, Mortification plays some very primitive thrash metal. Some very simple riffs thrown over some pretty standard beats, with some awesome growling vocals over everything else. Yet in this nice little collection of songs, Mort lays the groundwork for what will become some of the best tracks from their upcoming Self Titled release. Songs like Brutal Warfare, Journey of Reconciliation and Impulsation simply rock and really show the band's potential. Some songs fall short of the mark and sound almost goofy compared to the rest(example: Blood Sacrifice and New Begginings). Steve Rowe's vocals sound really good on this CD and have a youthful vigor that really makes the experience fun and exciting, as later Steve would exchange them for a more gutteral death metal grunt.
Lyrically this is Mortification, so expect some cheese here. Very evangelical in nature, but just as sincere as ever, you cant blame somebody for standing up for their beliefs.
Overall this album is a fun listen, as it has all the wonderful qualities of a garage band. The fresh ideas and youthful energy make this a wonderful preview for what was to come.
Standout Tracks: Brutal Warfare, Journey of Reconciliation, and Break the Curse.
