Nodes of Ranvier-Self Titled Released-2003 Label-Facedown Records Style-Hardcore/Metalcore In 2003 I had a lot of friends who were into metalcore and hardcore and they always talked endlessly about this band called Nodes of Ranvier. I would always swear that I would check them out, but days became months and months became years, and only now have I decided to check them out. I was really missing out. This stuff is real metalcore. No As I Lay Dying or Killswitch Engage type of sound. This band plays brutal riffs mixed with melody and passion. The icing on the cake is the vocals, a sort of inhuman growl complimented with some occasional clean vocals or spoken parts. The drumming is the only thing that didnt stand out to me like the rest of the package. It was almost like Nodes had predicted where metalcore was going and chose to avoid all of its trendyness. Even now five years after its release this album sounds fresh as a new release. Lyrically this is one of the most interesting bands I have encountered. You may not be able to tell by the track titles but the songs hold deep meanings and are filled with love and passion, although one will have to dig to find the biblical references scattered here and there. Overall I highly reccomend this CD to anyone who was turned off by metalcore in the past and would like to hear a good representation of the style. Standout songs: Kyrie, Butcher The Baker and The Candlestick Maker, and Dont Blink(or we may miss it) Reviewed by Dan.
