Evroklidon-The Flame of Sodom
Released-2005
Label-Bombworks Records
Genre-Black Metal
Swirling storms and a slow glooming guitar playing in the background is what I was greeted with when I popped in The Flame of Sodom. Evroklidon is a band from the Ukraine that plays black metal with quite a bit of redeeming value. I am either too blind or too stupid to figure out what is depicted in the cover artwork of this CD. It looks like some snow covered mountains, but I am not entirely sure. If anyone else knows please comment what it is below this review. Anyways the booklet is nice and glossy with a bunch of photos of the band members and all the lyrics are printed in there too. The lyrics are all in Russian I beleive and the ones in the booklet seem to be translations.
Musically Evroklidon plays mid paced black metal with a few heavy and very extreme moments. The song Devilish Beast In the Eternal Fire is a nice mid paced song with kind of a folky riff over some slower drumming. The experience is nice but I think the song could have been shorter seeing that the same riff was repeated quite a bit over and over again during the first half of the song, I kind of bored me. Luckily the second half of the song features a more melodic riff and some keyboards. The vocals were all shrieking, but kind of sounded more like blood curdling screams, kind of weird, but not too bad. The second song Legends of Old Men-Wisdom of the Ancient picks things up a quite a bit, with a fast and blasting riff at the beggining. The rest of the song is quite melodic with more shrieking over it and a really good melodic guitar section in the second half of the song. The Flame of Sodom comes in full black metal fury, with more raspy blackish shrieks and some fast double bass drumming. This extremely fast pace continues until there is a nice melodic break about 4 minutes into the song. After that prepare to be blasted by an even faster and more extreme riff. You have been warned. Funeral of a Dead Soul is another mid paced song with a few faster moments, the melody of the last half of the song is great. The last song Spiritual Battle starts with a clean intro and then goes back into more black metal for the remainder of the song.
Lyrically Evroklidon is quite a bit of fun. I felt like I was playing an RPG and learning the wisdom of the ancients, reading from the ancient book. What is awsome is the ancients are my ancestors and the ancient book is the Bible, very cool. The Flame of Sodom is a gruesome dipiction of God's judgement on sin, its almost too grusome.
Despite the kind of weird vocals and the songs that dragged a little too long, I really enjoyed this release. Good songs are The Flame of Sodom and Spiritual Battle.
