Feast Eternal-Prisons of Flesh
Released-2007
Label-Open Grave Records
Genre-Death Metal
Those of you who have been listening to Christian death metal for awhile already know about Feast Eternal. They originally released Prisons of Flesh seven years ago as an independent release, but it did not sound this good. Thanks to Open Grave Records this death metal album has been completely remastered and even has two very awesome bonus tracks to go with it.
This album sounds very good indeed, the re mastering of the disc has boosted the sound quality to a new level. Everything can be heard clearly and it helps the guitar melodies really shine. Feast Eternal plays a great combination of old school and melodic death metal. When I say melodic death metal I do not mean Gothenberg style death metal, but rather brutal and groovy riffs mixed in with some great melody. One thing I admire about this disc is the band's way of letting the songs breathe and not comforming to a standard verse/chorus/verse structure. Matt's drumming is excellent, he keeps that double bass kicking through most of the songs and keeps the brutality level up there. Vocally T.J. has a nice mid range growl that will dip deep into some nice gutteral growls, but is also able to rise into a black metal style shriek. Overall the vocals provide a nice level of consistency. My only complaint is the lack of solos on the album, I think the band would have benefited greatly from this. No worries though, as the two included bonus tracks feature a far superior level of guitar playing than was displayed on the actual album. This is a great taste of things to come and makes me very excited to hear their second album.
Feast writes very sincere lyrics on this album and avoids many of the cliches of the death metal genre. Sure sometimes the lyrics can be graphic, but it is to prove a point is not just there to make the band seem more metal. Mostly Feast sings songs about God's forgiveness and love, and provides examples from their own lives, good or bad.
Overall the whole package works and this is a highly recommended release to my ears. The combination of brutal drums, melodic guitar work, and some great gargling vocals really creates an enjoyable experience for the listener(granted if said listener likes death metal).
Standout Tracks: Immersion, Forgetting God, and Rage of Angels.
