i do both, sometimes straight amp distortion sounds great, sometimes it doesn't and the amp requires a proverbial "kick in the arse" so to speak.

An amp is limited by it's own circuits. The possibilities are very limited when it comes to tone. Pedals add their own circuits, (or computers depending on the brand) to the mix, increasing the possibilities. So, how limited do you want to be? Your tone is a musical representation of you. I've rarely heard two people who sound "identical." So, whatever means you use to create your tone, is fine by me. I love using pedals. I own several.

Cool guys yeh im not a huge pedal guy actually i think that when you have a amp like a mesa the tone out of that is richer and clearer than alot of pedals will get you and i also believe that signal strength is huge part of the sound you have. Havin said that keep telling me what you thinik ahhaa God bless

i think the magic ingredient for any guitarist is always this.......AIR. Nothing quite moves air around like a speaker pumping a huge amount of air all over the place. this AIR is what actually gives us our magical tone. Of course transistors, tubes, speakers and power transformers play a large part in this too

I use several effects and processors for my tone...though I'm not a very HEAVY distortion kind of person....I HATE Mesa's cause they have a VERY dry tone IMO, but that's what a lot of people like. I like to use compressors and different types of delays and I do use a lot of various kinds of other less used effects to get my tones. I also like to have distinct tones for different songs myself.
