Rehumanize/Demonic Dismemberment-Human Depravity Split CD
Released-2008
Label-None
Style-Grindcore/Goregrind
Christian grindcore is a style that has been fighting to establish itself for the last couple of years but seems to finally be gaining some ground. With the advent of Myspace Christian grindcore has been given the chance to expand and grow thanks to some key bands such as Vomitorial Corpulence, Vomitous Discharge, and Eternal Mystery. Last years 6 Way Sin Decomposition split CD was only a sample of what was to come. This paticular split CD is a good representation of what Christian grindcore bands are all about and what they have to offer to the extreme metal scene.
We'll start with Rehumanize. It only made sense that the two most brutal guys I know Phil Diez III(Sorrowstorm, Encryptor, Northern Ash) and Broc Toney(Eternal Mystery) would join forces to play grindcore. I must say the result is a good combination that really has become a force of its own and does not rely on the band member's previous efforts. Musically the band dishes out some great grind with some awesome catchy riffs coupled with a downright sinister sounding guitar tone. The vocals are your standard grindcore puking, screeching, belching, screaming, yelling, and talking. Dont bother trying to follow along with lyrics, just sit back and enjoy the sickness of the vocals. The drums are programmed but they still sound pretty brutal. I kind of wish that Phil Diez would have played a real drum kit on this release but hopefully he will do so in the future. The 20 Rehumanize tracks can be anywhere from 20 seconds to a minute in length. There is also extensive use of sound clips, most in English a few in Spanish. Productionwise I think this is actually a very good release as most grindcore bands have production varying between bad and unlistenable but Rehumanize you can actually crank up in the car and enjoy it. Lyrically the band is very up front about their beliefs as their sound clips signify. I will warn you though that you will most likely be offended by something found on this disc, which is really what grind is supposed to be about.
Next we have Demonic Dismemberment. This band plays more of a noise/sewer oriented style of grindcore. The drums are a strange mix of real and programmed. Its hard to describe really the closest band I think of that it sounds like might be Ganglia. I would say that the primary focus of DD would be noise. The vocals are mostly gutteral and gross sounding, sometimes it even makes me feel a little bit ill while listening to it which I am certain was probably the artists intention. These descriptions might sound negative if this wasnt a noise/grind record. I actually find these qualities quite satisfying considering the style of music. I will say though that the guitar tone is not so good and the production makes this record hard to listen to. There is no way you can decipher the lyrics which is fine since the lyrics are not posted anyway, but if you read the track titles youll see where the band stands on their faith.
Overall I'd say that out of the two bands I prefer Rehumanize as their tracks are more memorable with much more variation. On the other token Demonic Dismemberment has an orignal sound going for them, but they could use some better production and lyrics next time.
