A lot of people got 9 days off for New Years here (from the 27/12 to 04/01), but the real partying started on the 1st not on New Years Eve. Most people spend a quiet new years eve at home with their family watching the NHK (sort of like the Australian ABC, but more tame) variety concert. From the 1st to the 4th people went from place to place (friends or families) having parties.
