Um, I doubt there are 1001 offshoots of metal, but ill inform you of what I know
1. Heavy Metal-Slower, doomier, original. A combination of blues and hard rock to create a darker sound. Vocals are usually clean singing but not always.
2. Thrash Metal-Very punk influenced music using heavy metal guitar tunings. This type of music focuses on either speed or technichality or both. Vocals can be a mix up of clean singing, shouts or throaty growls, take your pick.
3. Grindcore(Also Known as Goregrind)-A very extreme version of punk that became hardcore that eventually got so fast that the music became noise and the vocals were grunts and growls.
4. Death Metal is similar to thrash because it focuses on speed/technicality. Death metal is much more extreme and low end than thrash. Vocals can be anything from high pitched shrieks to mumbled shouts to deep gutteral growls.
5. Black Metal is like thrash only very very very very very fast. Vocals are generally high pitched shrieks of agony.
a. melodic/atmospheric black metal uses alot of keyboards, melodic guitar riffs(although they can still be very extreme) and uses some technicality, although not nearly as much as thrash.
b.old school black metal is extremely raw in its production. The rawness is used to make the music sound brutal, but musically its the fasted most insane thrash youve ever heard in your whole life.
6. 80's metal/glam/hair metal-A mainstream take on traditional heavy metal(see #1) most of these bands simply played old school hard rock. There were little to no thrash elements to be found.
7. Power Metal-The child of thrash and glam metal. Power metal is very fast and technical(sometimes) yet focuses on melody alot and focuses much on very high pitched singing. Power metal bands general are very guitar centered and feature keyboards/choirs/andything shiny into their music. The whole goal is to acheive a very polished sound.
8-Doom Metal-Doom Metal and traditional heavy metal are essentially the same in alot of aspects, except that most doom can be classified as one of two things
really slow heavy metal or really slow death metal.
9-Metalcore- A mixture of hardcore and metal, usually metalcore bands use metal riffs and tunings but still stick to their tried and true, verse, chorus, verse, breakdown, chorus, formula.
10-Nu metal- Nu Metal has some eighties glam metal influences but is mostly a combination of hard rock and hip hop. Hard rock guitar riffs and vocals, with hip hop beats.
11-Gothenburg/Sweedish Death Metal-This genre is a dumb one in my opinion since 99% of these bands play really melodic thrash metal with death metal vocals.
12. Speed Metal-Thrash metal that focuses on speed.
Ok theres the twelve I am familiar with, i dont beleiver there are any more genres that ive heard of besides those.
